Machi (マチ, Machi) is one of the members of the Phantom Troupe, a gang of thieves with class A bounties [1]. She is the strongest physically of all the women in the Troupe and ranks 6th in the whole group in arm wrestling.
Appearance
Machi is one of the few Phantom Troupe members that prefers to wear
traditional Japanese-style clothing. She looks like a modern day kunoichi — female ninja. Her usual outfit consists of cycling short-like pants matched with a short-sleeved uwagi, an obi sash worn around her waist and a obijime is tied over it, a pair of fingerless gloves, tabi boots or socks with zōri,
and leg warmers that cover from the ankles up to her knees. She has
pink mid-back hair that is usually tied into an updo. In the 1999 anime
adaptation, her hair is dark purple.
Personality
Machi is one of the coldest members in the Phantom Troupe. She always
appears to be calm. Hisoka seems to have high regard for both Machi and
her abilities, although she considers Hisoka a pest at best and a
potential enemy of Chrollo's at worst. She has sharp intuitions, which
have turned out to be true most of the time and are trusted by some of
her comrades such as Nobunaga and Chrollo. Machi is incredibly loyal to
Chrollo and has stated that she would hunt Hisoka down if he were to
kill Chrollo.
Background
Not much is known about Machi, except that she, along with Chrollo Lucilfer, Feitan, Franklin, Nobunaga Hazama, and Pakunoda, is one of the original members that hail from Meteor City,
a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts of the world. People who live
there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the
city itself is known to very few people. It is also stated in manga and
anime that original members of the Phantom Troupe had something to do
with the bad blood between the Mafia and those from Meteor City. Why the
Troupe left the city is a mystery. Later, the group was joined by more
members, in accordance with Chrollo's idea of a group comprising of
exactly thirteen members, including himself.
Plot
Heavens Arena arc
Machi makes her first appearance right after the fight between Hisoka and Kastro in the Heavens Arena, waiting for the former in a locker room tunnel. She charges Hisoka 70 million Jenny
in total for patching up both of his severed arms then leaves after
giving him the message that the Phantom Troupe will be gathering in
Yorknew City on August 31st.Then (In the anime only), she watches
Hisoka's fight against Gon.
Yorknew City arc, Part 1
On 31st of August, Machi is seen again with Franklin, Nobunaga, and Feitan on their way to Yorknew City.
Later, at the meeting of the Troupe in an abandoned building of the
city, Chrollo tells her and the other members that they are going to
steal all the auction items of the Mafia's underground auction.
In the evening of September 1st, they infiltrate into the Cemetery Building,
where the auction is held, and kill all the mafiosi and their clients
but the auction items have already been removed from the vault by the Owl of the Shadow Beasts. They then fly to the Gordeau Desert on a balloon with the Mafia being hot on their heels.
After arriving in the desert, Machi and her comrades stand to one
side and watch Uvogin massacring a large number of Mafia gangsters and 4
Shadow Beasts single-handedly. When Uvogin is captured by Kurapika
she immediately uses a needle and a nen thread to track Uvogin. She and
4 other members then chase after Kurapika with a car but just before
they can catch up with him, the remaining Shadow Beasts
arrive and stop them. Machi and her teammates kill all of these Shadow
Beasts with ease except for the Owl, who they capture and torture to get
the auction items. Near midnight, they find where Uvogin is held
captive and free him after killing Dalzollene.
In the early hours of September 2nd, Machi tells Uvogin about the
items and the termination of the Shadow Beasts, but he insists on
finding the chain user — Kurapika — to get revenge instead of returning
to the Troupe's hideout with them. She and other members have no choice
but to let Uvogin do what he wants. Not long afterwards, he is killed by
Kurapika in a duel in the Gordeau Desert.
September
3rd, because Uvogin has not returned, she and Nobunaga pose as a couple
in the middle of a square in an attempt to lure out the chain user but
they attract Gon and Killua's attention instead and are tailed by them. With the help of Phinks
and Pakunoda, who have been secretly following them, they easily
capture the kids and bring them back to their hideout. In the evening,
she and the other members excluding Nobunaga launch a retaliatory attack
on the Cemetery Building, slaughtering around 2,000 Mafia gangsters and
professional assassins altogether. Thanks to Chrollo's smart move to
hire Illumi Zoldyck to assassinate the Ten Dons beforehand, they manage to avoid casualties. After the death of the Ten Dons, Kortopi
creates fake corpses of 5 of them to trick the Mafia into loosening the
building's defences and makes copies of the auction items. Machi and
her comrades proceed to sell the copies in the rescheduled underground
auction right afterwards. They then return to the hideout and celebrate
their victory.
Yorknew City arc, Part 2
In the afternoon of September 4th, in the Troupe's hideout, Nobunaga
insists that they keep pursuing Kurapika instead of leaving Yorknew.
Knowing it is impossible to dissuade him, Chrollo uses Neon's
ability to make prophecies about Nobunaga and some other members,
according to which 5 more of them will die if they meet the chain user
within 2 weeks. They then intend to return to Meteor City to avoid that
prospect, however Hisoka alters his own prophecy with the Texture
Surprise and manipulates the whole group into staying in Yorknew City so
that he can have the chance to fight Chrollo.
Later,
Chrollo is able to deduce that Kurapika is one of Neon's bodyguards,
and thanks to a pair of fake Scarlet Eyes that they sold him the night
before, they know that he and the other bodyguards are staying in Hotel Beitacle,
2.5 km from the hideout. Chrollo orders Kortopi, Machi, Nobunaga,
Pakunoda and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel. On the way, Chrollo
notices that they are being followed by 2 people so he tells Kortopi,
Nobunaga and Pakunoda to go ahead while he, Machi and Shizuku stay
behind. They then capture Gon and Killua again. Meanwhile, Pakunoda and
the other two are able to know Kurapika's name and face after capturing
and killing Squala.
Chrollo, Machi and Shizuku take Gon and Killua to the hotel and meet
up with Pakunoda's group in the hall. He tells Paku to check their
memories again, but before she can reveal what she has learned about
Kurapika, a power outage suddenly happens, allowing Gon and Killua to
break free from her grasp and attack her and Machi. Machi easily
recaptures Killua despite the total darkness and some broken ribs while
Nobunaga catches Gon. However, when the light comes back on, they
realize that Chrollo has been captured by Kurapika.
Phinks, Feitan and Shalnark soon arrive in the hotel. They then
receive a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to
hurt the hostages and give the phone to Paku. He then tells Paku to go
to Ringon Airport
alone to negotiate the terms of a hostage exchange and the other
members to return to their hideout. Phinks, Feitan and Shalnark try to
follow Paku, but Nobunaga stops them for fear that Chrollo would be
killed, leading to a heated quarrel between Nobunaga and Phinks. Because
Machi and Shizuku agree with Nobunaga and Kurapika tells them about
Melody's ability to detect lies, they all return to the hideout as told
by him.
Paku next comes back from the airport and tells them about the
conditions, which involve her going to the exchange location alone with
the kids. Phinks becomes so angry that he wants to get rid of the kids
then go after Kurapika but Machi disagrees with him. She and Kortopi
then almost get into a fight with Phinks and Feitan, who think that she
and the others are being manipulated by Kurapika, before their quarrel
is interrupted by Gon. Phinks finally agrees to let Paku go alone after
Franklin tells him that if he keeps being stubborn, the worst thing —
Chrollo's death — may happen.
After Pakunoda returns without Chrollo and the kids, Machi is one
of the 6 members who she gives her memories to before being killed by
Kurapika's Judgement Chain. Knowing that they cannot pursue and kill
Kurapika as long as the Judgement Chain is still tied around Chrollo's
heart, they stay in Yorknew to wait for Chrollo, who has left the city
in search of an Exorcist.
Greed Island arc
On September 6th, Phinks and Feitan steal a copy of the game Greed Island from Southernpiece auction house
and bring it back to the hideout. Machi and other members are invited
to play with them but they decline. Later, after Shalnark discovers that
Greed Island is an island in the real world and that there is an
Exorcist on the island, she enters the game with the other members to
search for this person. They are forced to cooperate with Hisoka because
Chrollo himself has asked Hisoka to find an Exorcist for him.
After the Troupe has located the Exorcist, Abengane, Machi is asked by Hisoka what she will do if he defeats and kills Chrollo
after Kurapika's Nen chain has been removed from his heart. She
responds that Chrollo will never lose to him, but if that were to
happen, she would hunt Hisoka down and kill him, demonstrating her
fierce loyalty to Chrollo. Hisoka says he would like that, in a playful
and somewhat flirtatious manner.
Combat
Being part of the Troupe, Machi is a very powerful fighter. She has
extreme confidence in her skills, demonstrated when willing to engage in
combat with both Phinks and Feitan in order to let Pakunoda go to the
meeting with Kurapika, and when claiming that, if Hisoka were to manage
to kill Chrollo, she would chase him and murder him. Furthermore, when
Gon and Leorio couldn't grasp the extent of her and Nobunaga's strenght,
Killua asked if picturing two Hisokas would have been of help. She has
superhuman physical features, like the rest of the Troupe, but has yet
to fight with her bare hands. The way she shielded herself when attacked
by Killua in the darkness proves that she knows at least the basis of
martial artistry, as she could protect her neck and head efficiently.
Her abilities in stealth are reminiscent of ninjitsu, matching her
kunoichi appearance.
Enhanced strength: The fact that she ranked sixth in
arm-wrestling despite being a woman is a testament to her high strength.
She can easily lift several grown man hung at her wires and, as stated
in the 2011 anime, she can slice a Nen user with them.
Enhanced speed and reflexes: Machi's speed is astonishing:
she was able to notice that Gon was going to move, to appear behind his
back and to grab him before he, despite his quick reflexes, could even
catch a glimpse of her or make a step. Moreover, she was the only one
able to act after Uvogin was entangled in Kurapika's Chain Jail,
throwing a Nen imbued needle at his calf to keep track of him. After he
unleashed his deafening howl, Uvogin stated that for people like her
covering her ears before the sound reached was no business at all.
Enhanced agility: Machi can run on the sides of buildings and easily jump horizontally from one to another.
Enhanced stealth: Her abilities in stealth go without saying, as she can approach and kill enemies without them noticing her.
Enhanced pain resistance: Machi is extremely resistant to
pain: she got stabbed in the chest by Killua and got some ribs broken,
and still managed to catch him and keep Gon under her control.
Enhanced perception: She sensed that multiple people
concealed with Zetsu where tailing her and Nobunaga, though she was
unable to tell their locations and number.
Master trap layer: Machi can use her wires to kill or bind
her enemies, not even bothering to show herself to her enemies in the
fight against the mafia. Her traps are hard to spot and can kill
multiple targets in a matter of seconds.
Strong Muscle Control: She seems to have excellent control
over her muscles as Killua was not able to retrieve his hand
immediately when he stabbed her with his fingers which lead to his
eventual capture.
Nen
Machi has never shown any abilities in Nen aside from the
transmutation of the said aura in wires. However, being a member of the
Troupe, she must be fairly skilled at it.
Machi's Nen Type: Transmutation
Type: Transmutation
Nen Stitches (念糸縫合)
Machi is capable of creating
threads which can be lengthened without limit and can only be seen by
using Gyo out of her aura. These threads can be used to sew open wounds
and even to completely reattach severed limbs in a short time.
Type: Transmutation
Nen Threads
Machi uses this technique to
manipulate her target's movements with considerable accuracy using the
threads like a puppeteer. She can also use them to capture or strangle
enemies. The strength of the threads is inversely proportional to their
length: a thread as long as the Earth's diameter would be as strong as
cotton, but a one-meter long thread could lift a ton.
Other abilities Sharp Intuition: Machi has incredibly accurate hunches,
resenting premonitions, as most of the Troupe members, including Chrollo
and Nobunaga, usually trust them to be true and she has never been
wrong before so far.
Trivia
Machi is the first Phantom Troupe member introduced in the series (not including Hisoka).
There is considerable confusion about Alluka's gender. Two of
Alluka's brothers, Illumi and Milluki, refer to Alluka as a brother, as
does the 2004 Hunter x Hunter official data book, but Killua, the
closest brother of Alluka, states that Alluka is a 'girl'. One way this
could be resolved is by considering Killua's familiarity with Alluka's
personality and humanity. While Alluka could be biologically a male,
Killua's interactions suggest that Alluka's psyche could be female.
For the purposes of consistency and convenience, in this article,
Alluka shall be referred to as being male until there is any concrete
evidence to the contrary in the manga.
Appearance
Alluka has black eyes. In Killua's flashback of his childhood in chapter 322 and in the family photo of the Zoldyck children. Alluka had long, straight, unbound black hair, and wore boy's clothing.
However, at present he wears the traditional clothes of a Japanese shrine maiden,
with boots and a headband adorned with cartoon faces; there are two
small straight bunches of hair, each of which is fastened by 4 hair
bands that each are decorated with the same cartoon faces on his
headband, hung down on the sides of the front of his head.
Personality
Before he was formally introduced in the manga, Silva calls him as a
dark and uncontrollable child. However, when he reunited with Killua,
Alluka displayed a rather jolly and lovable personality.
Killua, being most familiar with Alluka out of the rest of the
family, speaks of the difference between the real Alluka and the other
persona, referred to by Killua as "Nanika" (In Japanese, it means "it"
or "something"). The real Alluka calls Killua big brother while the other persona, calls him Killua.
Alluka displays a rather simplistic and child-like personality,
contrasting with Killua's mature composure, despite being only a year
between their ages. He is very fond of Killua, likely that he was the
only one to show any compassion towards him, and trusts him deeply. He's
shown to concern himself of his family's well being, especially Killua,
and blames his presence is negatively affecting his family. This
implies he has a compassionate personality, contrasting with his
potentially horrific ability.
History
Alluka's first appearance is in a family photo of the Zoldyck siblings and their mother
is shown to illustrate Kalluto's desire to get his older brother back
no matter how many years it will take. In the photo Alluka was not
posing together with his mother and siblings, instead he was standing at
a distance behind them and facing away. His name was not revealed in
the manga until chapter 321, and for a long period of time readers of
Hunter x Hunter could only guess the name of the facing-away child based
on the information about the Zoldyck family provided in the 2004
official data book.
Alluka officially makes his debut in the manga in chapter 321 in
which he is seen sitting unemotionally on the floor of a room full of
dolls. His father, Silva, when talking to Killua about him, refers to him as an 'it' and says that he is darkness.
Through Killua's flashback of his childhood, some background information about Alluka is revealed. As a little kid, Alluka once asked Mitsuba,
a female attendant of the Zoldyck family, to do 3 simple things:
carrying Alluka, going up a staircase, and raising Alluka up in the air.
After Mitsuba did what she was told, Alluka's eyes and mouth suddenly
turned pitch-black. Freaked out by this, Mitsuba called for help. Killua
came and changed him back to normal by asking him to make himself
(Killua) go high-high, which he did. After the accident, Killua had to
tell his parents about Alluka's secret because Mitsuba had already
reported it to them. It turned out when Alluka had 3 requests fulfilled,
his eyes and mouth would turn pitch-black, and they would change back
to normal only when he heard and granted a wish.
To
test his ability, his mother Kikyo ordered Mitsuba to decline any
request of him, no matter how small it was. Due to that, Mitsuba and her
lover Hasama, who was not around them at that time, were mysteriously
crushed into minced meat simultaneously. Killua explained that this was
the consequence of saying 'No' to Alluka's requests 4 times.
Some time afterwards, Yasuha,
another female servant of the Zoldyck family, gave Alluka a piggyback
ride at his request, thus activating his wish-granting mode. Giving in
to her greed at the time, Yasuha wished that Alluka would make her a
billionaire. Alluka agreed and suddenly a large amount of banknotes
started to rain down from a blimp in the sky. It was later reported that
a currency transport vessal had suddenly gone missing and by the time
it had been found all the money had disappeared, and the captain and
crew kept giving nonsensical answers.
Illumi became interested in Alluka's power and asked for Silva's
permission to deal with Kasuga, the next servant, to take care of
Alluka, in his own way. He told her to listen to Alluka's requests in
exchange for his tolerance of her romantic relationship with an outsider
to the Zoldyck family. When Kasuga
was with Alluka, suddenly Alluka asked her for her liver, which Kasuga
declined. Alluka followed it up with 3 continuous requests for her
duodenum, spine and brain respectively, which were all declined too. As a
result of Kasuga's refusal to fulfill those 4 requests, a total of 67
people, including herself, were killed at the same time by Alluka's
strange power. It was learned from this occurrence that Alluka's ability
had a cumulative effect; the greater the previous wish was (in terms of fulfillment difficulty),
the greater the consequences of refusing Alluka's next set of requests.
From this they also learned the requests became much more difficult to
fulfill after granting Alluka granted a large wish.
Plot
13th Hunter Chairman Election arc
Alluka
was initially introduced when Killua came back home to Kukuroo Mountain
to see him. He asked for his father's permission but Silva disagrees,
thinking that it's too dangerous. After a long talk, his father takes
him to Alluka's room which appears to be a big vault and can only be
opened after entering a 10-digit password. Alluka excitedly greeted
Killua when he entered the room, calling him Big brother. His first
wished for Killua to Die for him. Next is playing Shirirtor and lastly, patting Alluka on the head.
Through a surveillance camera, Silva, Kikyo and Milluki
are watching the whole seen. Kikyo is delighted in Killua's action
while Milluki regrets wishing for a PC which made Alluka's wishes on
Killua so easy. This earns him a glare from his father. Silva then asks
about the rules regarding Alluka's power. When Killua decided to take
Alluka with him, Silva disapproves and insists that the wish shall be
made inside the room. Killua wishes that if they are not be able to
leave the mountain together, Kikyo will be killed. If yes, then Alluka
will give Killua a kiss on the cheek. Silva lets them leave, but orders
few butlers to accompany them, including Gotoh, Canary, Tsubone and Amane.
As they make their way to the hospital where Gon is, the car is
crashed by a truck whose drivers where being manipulated by Illumi.
Killua protects Alluka, if he stays at least one meter away from Alluka,
he will be taken home instantly. As Illumi and Hisoka
watch from afar, the assassin orders the latter to eliminate the
butlers, or if possible, take Alluka away from Killua. Using his Kanmuru
ability, Killua escapes their butlers with ease but Tsubone is seen
following them. Alluka asks Killua if he is only a hindrance to him, but
Killua says it's okay and he will always be with Alluka no matter what.
Killua and Alluka continue to escape and are still followed by
Tsubone. Killua tries to escape faster by using Kanmuru but Tsubone uses
her ability that can catch up to Kanmuru's speed. The two Zoldycks
reach an airport and rides an airship to further escape Illumi. Alluka
is seen sleeping inside while Killua drives the airship himself. He
explains to Morel about Alluka's wish-granting ability, which Morel thinks as a vaguely terrifying ability.
When the airship they were riding on finally landed Killua made
arrangements to continue their escape by car, only to find themselves
surrounded by Illumi and his manipulated needled people. There he asked
for Alluka to be handed to him where Killua straightly refused. In the
middle Tsubone appeared and revealed that it was her fault that they
were tailed through a hidden camera that was being feed to their Mother
and Milluki, where the latter in turn was sending the information to
Illumi's phone, After seeing Tsubone Alluka's request-mode commences
again where Alluka ask for the nails from her middle and ring finger
completing the 3 requests entering to the wish granting state. Instead
of using the wish to get out of the predicament they were in, Killua
used the wish to heal Tsubone's hand to demonstrate and reveal to Illumi
some rules that he only knows. Afterwards, Alluka's personality is
switched for Nanika's and falls asleep. Nanika is considered by Killua
to be the most kind-hearted person he knows.
Finally,
Alluka wakes and finds himself in Gon's room. Killua asks him to turn
into Nanika but Alluka refuses wanting to stay with Killua. Killua begs
Alluka eventually Alluka gives in and changes into Nanika. Killua asks
for Nanika to heal Gon, Nanika complies and touches Gon's hand. As
Nanika is healing Gon, a huge energy comes from the latter, it's so
powerful that Hunters in the Hunters Association building felt it.
Alluka successfully heals Gon and falls asleep.
Later, Alluka is seen asleep in Killua's arms as Illumi approaches.
Illumi tells Killua if he can have control over Alluka, like Killua
does, he well guarantee minimum freedom for Alluka. However Killua wakes
Nanika asks for Illumi to be sent home, which Nanika does. Amane and
Tsubone leave the room voluntarily and heads back to the Zoldyck manor.
Killua tells Nanika that he can't come out anymore, Nanika disagrees and
is clearly upset by Killua saying how much he liked Killua. After a
brief argument which led Killua to yell at him, he becomes upset and
leaves as Killua wanted never to come out. Alluka returns and is angered
by what Killua said to Nanika, Alluka yells at Killua saying that he
needs to protect Alluka and Nanika and that he would hate any brother
who was mean to Nanika. Killua realizes his mistake and asks Alluka to
bring Nanika out so he could apologize. Nanika reappears teary and upset
from the previous confrontation, Killua apologizes for being a horrible
brother and promises to protect him.
Combat Abilities
Unlike the other children of the Zoldyck family who were trained from
a very young age to possess such abilities as high resistance to
poisons and electricity and great physical strength, it is stated by
Illumi that Alluka has no combat abilities at all and he is just like a
normal kid when it comes to fighting.[3]

Wish Granting
Alluka is a Specialist.
He will grant one wish after a person fulfills three of his requests.
After the requests have been completed, Alluka's eyes and mouth darken
to black and he transforms into an unknown entity. The wish doesn't have
to come from the one who fulfilled Alluka's requests, as even an extra
party can have their wish granted for as long as it was declared in
Alluka's presence (as Nanika), who would usually state 'Aye' as
confirmation that the request made to him was granted. According to
Killua, the degree of wish that Alluka can grant is probably infinite,
going from briefly levitating a person into the air, to affecting
probability to make a certain effect occur. However, the greater the
wish made to Alluka is, the greater his next three requests will become.
The one that must bear the cost of the next three requests is not the
one Alluka granted the wish to; it is the next person who must do it.
And if that next person declines to fulfill Alluka's requests four
times, depending on the difficulty level of the previous wish, at least
two people, he and his most loved one, will die. The other people who
die, along with the recipient of the requests and the recipient's most
loved, are in order of who the recipient spent the most time with
regardless of whether or not the recipient loved that person. One
example is when Kasuga, a servant of the Zoldyck family, declined
Alluka's 4 requests, the cost of the billionaire wish made previously by
Yasuha was transferred to her, and thus she, her lover, and 65 other
people were crushed to death.
There are five rules about Alluka's power known by the Zoldyck
family as a whole, but Killua is aware of some others by himself. Below
are the rules known by the family:
If someone fails to Alluka's requests and gets brutally killed,
the difficulty level of Alluka's requests returns to level 1. That is
the best time to make a wish.
If Alluka is making requests from a particular person, they
cannot be moved over to another person mid-way. Therefore if that
particular person disappears such as concealing themselves, Alluka is
unable to make requests to anybody else.
If the person fulfilling requests dies mid-way, it will count as a failure and at least one more person will die.
Alluka cannot make requests of someone without knowing the person's name.
The same person cannot ask Alluka for concecutive wishes, Killua seems to know of a way to bypass this condition.
Rules known only by Killua:
While Alluka can grant only 1 wish at a time, one can give
Alluka several conditions to a wish, therefore greatly expanding the
capacities of what one can ask of Alluka before granting another 3
requests.
If a wish is made for healing, Alluka must make physical
contact with the target; there isn't any sort of cruel backlash as well.
This may simply be a rule Killua made up due to his special privilege.
When Alluka changes into the wish-granting mode, Alluka becomes
something else, a separate entity. Killua calls this separate entity by
the name "Nanika", which means "something" in Japanese. The origin of
"Nanika" is currently unknown and is simply described as "some
unnatural, wrong place." However, it is revealed that Nanika is a part
of Alluka that only shows up after a wish is made to heal someone. After
a healing wish is made, Nanika switches places with Alluka, tires out
and falls asleep.
Killua, due to his relationship with Alluka and Nanika, is
given special privileges. When he "commands" Alluka, his request will
bypass any existing backlash and will be granted without any
repercussions. If somebody else wishes other than Killua, they will
suffer the same repercussions of the previous wish that was supposed to
be given. This privilege has been deduced by Illumi, adding to his
craving to control Killua in order to control Alluka's abilities.
Relationships
Killua Zoldyck
Main Article: Killua Zoldyck
Killua is Alluka's closest brother. They were always playing
together as children. When Killua found out about Alluka's wish granting
abilities, he kept it a secret from the whole family. Later, they were
reunited when Killua went back home to Kukuroo Mountain. Killua looks
after Alluka and tries his best to protect him. Alluka doesn't want to
be separated from Killua again, but Killua promises him he'll stay.
